Homage to Small Town USA

March 9, 2010

Homage to Small Town USA:
A fabulous photographer, Keith Scott Morton, told me when I started to shoot to keep a running list of the places I was going because I would forget. Well, of course I didn't listen and now wish I could remember all the places that I breezed in and out.   From the Motel 6 in Indiana whose staff woke me up to get in the hall in the kneeling position along with several burly truck drivers for a torneado was touching down six miles away to the haunted Bed & Breakfast that I stayed in, it was quite an education.  Over the years a few towns were extra special so I thought I would mention them.  If you ever get the chance to visit, Go!

Austin:  Much as been written about this special place and it's all true.

Roundtop, Texas: About an hour from Austin this is a truly only-in-Texas sort of place that comes alive 2x a year for the antique & junk shows.

The Junk Gypsies started this thing where they dress in vintage prom wear and have dancing/drinking one night during Antique Week. It's a huge draw. I took this during the set up when folks were just starting to arrive.

Lake Lure, NC: I am from NC and had never been but it was like being a summer camp for five days.
sigh. No visuals. You'll just have to take my word for it.

Whitefish, Mt: The most beautiful drive I have ever taken was from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho to Whitefish, Mt. I went six hours without passing another car.  Stunning! In fact, the drive was written up in National Geographic magazine as one of the 10 most scenic routes in the WORLD. I believe it.

I kept thinking "So, I get paid to come here?"

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin:  Ws had never been on my hit list but after a fantastic trip to the most adorable summer camp turned residence, I became a fan.

The oh-so-happy girl is the World's Greatest Assistant, Brooke Walis.

Dorset, Vt: Straight out of a novel, it offers up everything you want in a small New England town including its own grumpy yet famous author, John Irving.

All that travel was fun but I was always glad to see my own 400 square feet.

I love it! I can only imagine the stories you could tell. Keep telling them! I should revise that; be sure to leave me out of any story telling. Wink wink! And you know I live LARGE!!!
