Holiday & Year End Wrap Up

Happy Holidays, All!

Full of eggnog and Christmas cheer, I hope no matter how small your home is that it's full of love and laughter this holiday. I'm headed out on Safari (yipee!) but I'm leaving you with 3 final thoughts for this 2011. (See you in 2012!)

#3: For the good or bad, this was one heck of a year. Buzz Feed did a great job of summing it up visually. Insanely deadly weather, fierce anger and uncertainty seemed to mark 2011 but also some seriously cool things like the Middle East revolutions and the pull out from Iraq. Mostly, it's a good reminder that the best gift is that of a home and for those of us who weren't hit by a hurricane, tornado, tsumni or financial devastation then help support those who were. After all, we're all in this life together.

House Paint Low Down

One of the side effects of working at a lifestyle magazine is the itch to decorate comes up a lot. As I posted a few weeks ago, I recently painted my apartment after one too many years and it's like getting the best high lights (that will mean something to you blonds out there). Having worked with lots of paint companies and with designers who are passionate about a particular hue, I practiced what I preached and took my time making the final selection. More than any other thing, I get questions about paint color. Everyone (even interior designers & stylists) seem to get a touch nervous about what to do. The standard advise is to pick a few colors and paint them on your wall (or get large swatches) and live with them for a few days to see how you feel before making the plunge. Good advise that no one seems to follow. Watching Bravo's Millionaire Decorator show one evening, I was struck by how even they didn't yield to this advise. In one scene, fancy pancy designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard walked in as a second coat was being applied and didn't like it so much yet he had to deal with it since the clients were on their way in. Another blogger friend recently told me she advises everyone doing a renovation to include a paint "redo" since at least one room won't turn out right. Fair enough but considering how important paint is, it's still better to try and get it wrong than not paint at all.

Here are a few things that I have learned from years of paint stories and my own recent painting experience. Hope they help to make a happy painting experience!

#1 Color Confused? Another blog I'll talk about paint selection but definitely bring home samples of colors (either swatches or small bins of paint that you can paint a wall with to see how you feel living with it. Look at it in the morning and night. Look at it with your furniture and fluff. Does it go cold on you? Or turn another color as the light pales? Does it seem "off" or not as sunny as you wanted... Consider all this after living with the color options for at least a few days. Not just painting the walls but the ceiling, wainscoting, floors or exterior? That affects which paint you should use as well.

There are so many different paint companies so check out a big box store's selection with the big boys (Benjamin Moore, Sherwood Williams, Behr etc) and also the smaller paint companies like Farrow & Ball, CB2, Sunny's Paints, Yolo. Like beauty companies, everyone has one standout color or product and different price points. Is it a kids' playroom that you want to be no or low voc (aka eco friendly) or is it an area you want to splurge a bit? A gallon of paint can range from $25 -140; that's quite a difference.

#2 The final result is only as good as the time you (or your painters) took to prep the walls.
While painting the walls is the fun part, it's not the most important. Take everything off the walls and check the condition. Fill in the holes if you have them. Do you need to skim coat? If so, apply a thin layer of plaster to improve the wall's appearance. Some paint has primer in it but if not, put one down. It'll help the paint be its best. Also, consider your baseboards or moldings and prep them as well. Seriously, this is where people skip or get lazy but it's like a lined pair of pants versus unlined; it makes a world of difference. Factor in a day to do this part. I promise you, it'll be worth it.

#3 Hire someone. I know, I know.... it's just painting, right? But unless you are Really Meticulous, I would recommend hiring someone to get that professional look. If you can't score a painter recommendation from a reliable person, explore CraigsList which has tons of service folks. Check out their websites first and call a former client if possible. I HIGHLY recommend a face to face visit to walk through the area with the painter so they'll really be in to give you a proper estimate and foresee any roadblocks.

#4 Keep some extra paints for touch ups as accidents do happen. Also, keep the color swatch somewhere safe in case your memory fades and you want to repaint the same color.

Have a Seat

Heading down to High Point to see miles and miles of sofas, chairs, tables, lamps and rugs at the monster furniture show. It's always good to see what waves this industry is making. Trends are started here and these companies set the pace for others to follow. That said, there's a lot of well designed and well priced pieces out there so sharing a few favorite finds in case you're on the hunt. These aren't future heirlooms but solid pieces that offer some personality. Here goes....

Urban Outfitters got this adorable chevron chair that comes in a few different colors and all for under $300.

Nate Berkus's ottoman is pretty great at $119 from HSN. Having lugged one home from a trip to Moroccan, I am impressed with this look for less.

Leave it up to Martha Stewart to try and get us all crafting. Her table for Home Decorators gets me dreaming about all the projects that I could do on it-the painting, the sewing, the computer surfing.... And priced at $229, it's a "getable" dream.

Leave it to West Elm to update the already classic parson's table. It's perfect for us who need to consolidate the cords in our lives. It's a bit pricer at $399 but with it's built in speakers and docking station, it gives small space dwellers a nice two in one piece.

Laugh Worthy

Lately, it's seemed design has gone all high brow and seriously or maybe it's just the conversation at my watering holes but today's post is about getting the laugh back. Sometimes we just need some silly in our lives. We need something in our home that makes a smile every time we see it and that starts off conversations. I call this the wacky factor. Here's several things that would serve that purpose well.

Ceramic pig speaker from West Elm. Seriously, never met a pig that I didn't love and this is not exception. Even funnier, this little piggy can be monogrammed so personalize your pig and make it your own.

Haus Interiors has laugh out loud cards that can be framed for instant, funny art.

Check out these sticky notes from Fred Flare. It'd be way more fun to write the day's to do lists on these.

Ok, I can't help myself-what about having one of these laying around to give a laugh from Regas.

Art is so personal. What makes a Picasso is a discussion I'll let others lead but I am grateful to art and people who live with it. In my recent apartment spruce up, I looked around and realized that like having an aol email (yes, it's true and yes, it's still in business) and mom jeans, art can get dated or no longer represent my current "vibe."

So I did something really effective; I took every single piece down. Suddenly my freshly painted walls were feeling like a blank canvas and I allowed myself to think of new ways to arrange my favorite pieces and I parted with a few that had supplied their joy and needed new homes.

I found that some pieces just needed a new frame while others needed new arranging as some pieces were just ok or even silly on their own but in a pack, throw a punch. As a big believer in the gallery wall for art, it shows instant personality, especially when the gallery is full of personal articfacts and pitcutres. West Elm has the best frames with lovely linen backing that look much more expensive than alternatives found at Target and start at $12. Keeping the frames all one color like black or white crossed another decision off the list (though I love to mix in some metal like below too).

A mass of frames is nice but adding in a few non framed items to keep things more interesting. Here's a picture of a cool picture tacked up with Japanese tape that makes instant art so charming.

Need art but wondering where to go? Art isn't something that I go to the mall and get but rather pick up a piece here and there and it tells the story of my travels in ways that words don't. On the hunt for new pieces, I've been hitting art schools like SCAD which features student works and ships nationwide. If you are lucky enough to have an art school in your town, consider contacting the school to see when their next student show is. You could be buying the next great thing for a song.

Like Match.com for dating or streamline.com for ordering takeout, 20x200 brings great art home. They give artists a way to sell their creations as prints but still retains the cool factor because only 200 are actually printed. (You'll also be seeing their program with West Elm this fall but definitely check out their own site as well for the very best selection.)

Zatista is another online retailer that brings art to your front door and has a wide collection of art presented. Lastly, VintageandModern has terrific art too. Am a big fan of their photography in particular.

Thank you, Mr. Jobs

You'd be hard pressed to pick up a magazine or newspaper without some nod to Steve Jobs and his influence this week. While others debate his place in history and try to rank his importance, I was just a fan. An apple was my first computer and from that purchase, I was a convert. For folks who care about design, he just made things better. And like most New Yorkers, my iPhone isn't often far away. His ability to make technology Simple and Intuitive while wrapping it up in a deceivingly cool design made people like me sign up and pay.

Saturday, I popped into this Apple Store in the Meatpacking District and touched at the personal notes left by others. I wonder if there has ever been a CEO who was as loved as he was. He made things personal and we, apple fans, loved him for it. When Sam Walmart died, was it the same way? Or the founder of McDonald's? I know no one will be crying over the death of Wells Fargo's CEO (well, at least not the general public).

Stories have been coming out over his obsession with keeping Apple designs truly steam lined. I wish everyone edited their home as well as he edited his projects to be the simplest design that worked incredibility hard. With that as a design motto, we'd all live better.

But it was his business sense that made sense to me as well. In an era of focus groups and lack of vision from companies, his NY Times Obituary summed up his leadership, "Mr. Jobs' own research and intuition, not focus groups, were his guide. When asked what market research went into the iPad, Mr. Jobs replied: None, It's not the consumers' job to know what they want."

He summed up his life creed to the Stanford 2005 class, "Stay hungry. Stay foolish."

Guest Post on Small Bathroom Design Inspiration

Storage is key in a small bathroom. Building in storage shelves between studs or creating shelves around the tub adds more storage to a tiny footprint.

Dark walls, like really dark navy or black, will recede and make a small bathroom feel larger. White matted artwork and gold accents stand out more against the dark walls.

A trick to make a small bathroom feel bigger is to carry the shower tile along the walls. This gets rid of the visual break between shower and the rest of the room. Glass enclosures and shower doors help too.

Along with patterned wallpaper, add some big design statements, like an ornate mirror or chandelier, to make small bathroom designs feel like a jewel boxes instead of closets.

Tiny bathrooms and powder rooms are perfect places to go bold with a wallpaper or paint color. Hang artwork to add interest.

Carry color onto the ceiling. Adding stripes to the ceiling draw the eye to the vertical space of a small room. Bold vertical stripes can work in a small space.

A vanity with an open base feels visually lighter in a tight space. Adding mirrors opens up the room and reflects light. Both are clever bathroom design ideas.

If wallpaper seems like too much of a commitment or you are a renter, add bold pattern and color in a stylish shower curtain. Love this one! For the Love of Ikea

Have you gotten it yet? The 2012 catalog arrived the other day and found a renewed place on top of my limited sqare footage resource list. Small space dwellers rejoice! On the catalog, it sums up my decorating mantra. "A home doesn't need to be big, just smart." Amen to that.

Ikea breaks it down into a few key ideas that maximize every inch for us. Here they are:

Idea #1) Get more storage & counter space in the kitchen with their efficient kitchen islands.

Idea #2) Use your vertical space when looking for more room like lofting bunk beds for additional space below.

Idea #3) Put your walls to work with hanging shelves, hooks, cabinets etc.

Idea #5) Look for pieces that have multiple uses and don't take up as much room like 2 chaises instead of 1 sofa in the middle of a room.

Idea #6) Dream big! Want that proper closet in your bedroom? Bet they can make it happen so you don't always have to forgo those nesting dreams just because the space is small.

Bling

Lulu Frost has been a favorite designer since she had the SMARTS to take the iconic Plaza's room numbers and letters and turned them into necklaces. Shoot! I went to that sale... (when Plaza unloaded their goods before getting it's zillion dollar renovation) and should have picked up a few. Now everyone can wear a bit of the Plaza.

J. Crew has now partnered up with her, selling art deco inspired bangles for a mere $45 a pop.

Lulu isn't the only one that takes visual inspiration from hotels. More and more, folks are creating their own interiors based on their dream holiday places. Some design savvy hotels have wised up and now offer their bedding, toiletries and even their furniture for sale along with mini bar selections and the ubiquitous white robe.

Random Fashion Week Feed

Fashion week opened with a bang this week in NYC with Anna Wintour's Fashion Night Out giving gals (and some boys) the excuse to sport killer heels and unleash their latest fall finery. From downtown to uptown, stores extended their hours and turned up the dance music in efforts to open everyone's wallets. While FNO's may now be global movement, to me it's just a super fun night out.

The fashion big wigs gave Valentino an award from The Couture Council in NYC for his amazing work. From the two documentaries on him, I've been inspired by the amazing interiors he's created along his fashions.

Yves St. Laurent made me smile with this number. It looks like something that Myrna Loy would've worn in her 1930's Thin Man Series with William Powell.

Inspired by the spirit blazing through the city that happens twice a year, couldn't help but think about the loss of Alexander McQueen. Here's an over the top rug he created for The Rug Company that is truly an heirloom. It's called Hummingbird and it's got a permanent place on my "must get" list.

Another fashion trailblazer who has crossed well into the home market is Vivenne Westwood. Check out her Magnolia rug from The Rug Company. Being from the South, this rug hits a pleasant place for me but it's also just a really great rug.

All this fashion talk and inspiration has gotten me thinking, well where would I put new dudes anyway? After all, the closet is already bulging. Ikea has the answer. A easy to put together and move around clothes rack for $44.

Garage Heaven

Annie Selke, owner of Dash & Albert (the BEST rug company) and Pine Cone Hill (bedding turned lifestyle company), is one of those people who make things happen. She gets design for real people and is a woman who appreciates order. We got to see Annie's sense of style in her monthly column last year in House Beautiful magazine when bought then renovated a house following a divorce which meant down sizing slightly and reordering her life. Of the 12 columns, my very favorite was her two car garage that also acts as her entrance. It's fun yet orderly and made me smile. Who wouldn't want to drive into this every day?

It gives ideas for small space dwellers too like keep design in unexpected places (aka closets and nooks) and bring in color to add some sizzle, especially darker spaces. Annie has a book coming out in two weeks so if you like this (and her companies) consider pre-ordering a copy on Amazon.

Home offices

The time has come. The bills are stacked and life's to do's have piled up so time to take care of personal business but it's so much more fun to do that in a space that's fresh and inspirational. Trying to create such a zone in my small abode, I turned a closet into a TINY home office and tried to make it fun by painting it pink, putting up meaningful memorabilia and jazzy office supplies but it's gotten old so I'm looking for new take on how others set up their home office. Here's a few that caught my fancy.

Bigger in square footage than the others, this one has the room to spread out but I do think the floral shades and hits of burnt orange feel fresh. Love the black painted bamboo chair.

Another room that uses beige to great success is this room. Same feel but obviously lot smaller space. Works well, I think....

It seems the kitchen is the new hub of the family so it makes sense to have one in the kitchen if your space allows. Love how the desk has a hit of chevron to give a design statement even if only on the drawers.

OK this picture has made it's rounds on the blog world but it's exactly the sort of office set up that I have... a converted office right off the bedroom. Love the glam factor & sense of order.

The West Elm Parson's table keeps me in order now so I liked seeing how another home office sets theirs up. I like the color palette but wonder where she keeps her office supplies.

Gosh, to have a whole room.... I like this set up too and the pale green is nice though I'd need a better chair.

There's the IKEA desk that shows up in most dorm rooms. Love the red legs and hit of wallpaper. The clock decal on the back of the door offers some humor which is always helpful when writing bills.

Mimi Takes Manhanttan

Two months ago, a blond walked into the start up magazine that I am working at to begin her summer stint as our Style Department's summer intern and I knew immediately the fun had started. Mimi was brand spankin' new to NYC, coming from the interior design program at LSU. Hailing from outside New Orleans, I wasn't worried about her handling the characters of New York (I mean, New Orleans if FULL of characters, if nothing else) but conquering the subway system was another thing. Being handed assignments Day 2 that sent her scouring the city meant she had to jump in with all her weight or she might not survive the fast paced environment of magazine land. Her gig was hard because there wasn't any real "job" description or intern handbook that could pave the road for her. She was the first so she had to ask a lot of questions and be a quick study. After she'd been there a few days, I sat down with her to talk about what she wanted out of the experience. I told her that my expectation for her summer wasn't that she return to school with new design sketches or a loaded Rolodex or being able to name off every interior designer in the city but rather to be curious about life around her while she was here. She'll make the contacts, get the inspiration for new projects and learn the big wigs in the design community if she learned to be really curious about life. I wanted her to explore NYC as hard and deep as she could. Hit Broadway, walk everywhere, eat weird foods, visit different boroughs, hit the museums-the list went on. And man, did she take this advise and run with it. She started a delightful blog, Little Girl, Bigger Apple. She walked the Brooklyn Bridge, hit the Met, fell in love lamb meatballs tapas at Alta and hated shopping on Canal Street (understand that) and supported local businesses with gusto. She did most of it by herself too, leaving work at 6pm after a full day to continue her nighttime city exploration. When company came (and boy, did they), she'd take them to favorite haunts and shared the experiences in her blog.

Like the teacher learning from the student, coming up with places for her to check out, got me seeing the city with new eyes again too. Walking the Highland the other night, I felt like I saw the city as she would have seen it and loved it. I've become a new fan of Rockaway Beach with it's-brand-new-this-summer-foodie-boardwalk and clean beaches. Rather than toss out an off Broadway special offer for a new show claiming to be "too busy" I actually bought a ticket. I found myself looking in Time Out and New York Magazine for new, interesting things and dissatisfied with nights not filled with something fun. Her sense of adventure made me proud.

At some point, we started depending on her so much at work that she got the nickname "boss". We felt like we were working for her when she cracked the whip on a task and she developed a sense of ownership of her work which we loved. Sadly, she left us on Saturday to return to college where, no doubt, more adventures are awaiting but I sure feel blessed to have had her in my orbit this summer. Needless to say, the Style Department now holds a Very High Bar for incoming interns. The non-curious need not apply.

In honor of Mimi, here are five new things I discovered this summer:

#1 Rockaway Beach-A bit of a haul on the subway but soooo worth it. Clean beaches, nice crowds, a DJ that plays good tunes and really yummy food on the boardwalk.

#2 Late evening picnics in Central Park. I've always done picnics during the day but I joined friends one summer night at twilight and it was truly magical.

#3 Richard Serra's Drawings at the Met. Just stunning (and yes, the McQueen exhibit next to it was worth the weight too).

#4 Drinks overlooking Central Park at the new Design Museum. It's a small, charming museum with a penthouse restaurant/bar view worth visiting. The piano player is tops too!

#5 Free yoga at Union Square is a hoot and nice way to start to the day.

What's cooking in the kitchen?

On the hunt for new recipes, I stumbled upon this lovely blog, Big Girls, Small Kitchen, perfectly suited to us small kitchen folks. Here's the skinny on them:

Aren't they adorable? And good for them for finding joy in starter apartment kitchens. (Besides, while I may not be in my 20s anymore and I've lived in five or so apartments, the kitchen doesn't seem to be getting much bigger from my first walk up.) Who says you have to have a kitchen island and every tool known to man to produce great food anyway? As a design nut, I'm always interested in how folks use and organize their cooking space. Here's how they did theirs:

Supper's Served

Maybe it's too much time reading Food & Wine, Saveur and Food Network but I can't get out of the kitchen. With the best of summer on sale at the green market, it's the time of year that I crave friends hanging out on the sofa drinking Arnold Palmers and eating tomato pie + ice cream sandwiches. Luckily, friends have been humoring me to join the summer feast so I have reason to break out the cooking guns. Saturday, my market basket was brimming with scallops (for ceviche), corn (for corn pudding) and tomatoes (for bruschetta or BLTs or tomato pie or gazpacho - I can't decide). The problem with this kind of cooking is when the party is over and I'm faced with a random mix of foods in the fridge. What's a girl gonna do?

She's going to go over to gojee for a frugal chef's answer to a prayer. This ingenious site allows you to plug in what's in that fridge or kitchen cabinet then scans all the blogs and sites for recipes to use what you have. You can even link up to your grocery store card so it knows what you're buying. Really hate one ingredient? It lets you list so you won't get sent any recipes with that ingredient. For this techno newbie, it's like Bourne Identify meets Julia Childs. Happy Cooking!

Porch Envy

It's the last week in July and the weather begs for a long night spent rocking on the front porch. Or side porch. Or back porch. Quite frankly, any porch. Here are two sleeping porches that caught my eye recently. Both are a happy marriage of form and function.

Poteet Architects created a fun take on the front porch in an L shape. I love how the space has different places to enjoy it.

I can't get enough of hooks in my life. From holding towels to dog leashes to handbags to big bangles, the hook is one of those all purpose things that every home should have. The good news is that there's a wealth of good ones out there. Here's a few worth considering.

One of my very favorite online shops, Gretel Home, has a fantastic collection. Why get 1 when you can get a set of 6? Designed by Very Good & Proper, a design firm from UK, these offer a hit of color and would look great on a bright white wall.

More hilarious hooks from Gretel Home that would be fun in a kitchen. Who can resist laughing at these?

Anthropologie has terrific hardware and this animal hook is not exception. Owls have had their moment. Let's give the giraffe her due.

The Hook Lady is one to have bookmarked. She supplies a lot of stores like Ralph Lauren their hooks. I met her years ago at the flea market in NYC and have enjoyed watching her business grow. Love her horse and elephant hooks.

Picnic Crazy

I love a picnic whether on the carpet, in the backyard, in the local park, on the beach or dock. Here's a few things that keep me picnic party ready.

Ikea has the best napkins for 1.49 pack. I always stock up when I make it there.

Toss bright colored flatware in a bucket and bring out for last minute park runs. The Dollar Store usually has a nice selection.

Wasara is a japanese line of picnic productions that are biodegrable and can be reused for a few uses if they don't get "wet". Branch Home sells a kit for 8.

Another option for green friendly folks is this party kit from Branch Home.

While visiting Nantucket a few years ago, I fell in love with a cute shop and the owners had put together this book. It's been dog earred like crazy and while it's not my kitchen bible, a few times each summer it gives me inspiration. Recipes for lobster rolls and clam bakes get me there without actually going. Amazon sells.

Favorite Apps

Summer interns always entertain me. They do those tasks that I dread and get excitement over things like taking the subway and meetings. This summer I have the pleasure of working with a sassy gal who hails from New Orleans. Here's a few apps that Miss Summer Intern has put me onto that I love:

Palettes: Take a picture of a sunset or any favorite image and it'll break down the colors used.

Benjamin Moore's Color Capture: Tells you what any color is.

Units: For those of us not so math inclined.

And Run Pee

No joke. There is an app called "Runpee" that tells you when to make a run for the loo during a movie. It tells you the time (62:8 minutes) and the line that is said to cue you to start out the door.

I would also add What the font as a new favorite of mine. Font obsessed, it tells me what it is or a close version.

Better yet? They are all free.

Fresh off the train from a visit to a friend's new house in lovely Connecticut. We walked the house while she shared her hopes and dreams for the house and we brainstormed. Decorating a home is one thing but designing a new life for a family is another. One of my favorite parts of her home was the large backyard filled with bunnies, happy birds and old trees. Their backyard has a perfect spot for an outdoor structure that could be a playhouse for the kids, a garden room for her or a home office. That reminded me of a current obsession- Modern Cabana. This is a great resource to add a little square footage to your home's green space.

Hitting the beach this Memorial Day, I hunted around for my beach towels which I keep stored in my Moroccan puff. They were a bit sad looking after surviving a Very Long Winter in a tight ball. It got me checking out the different towels on the crowded beach. Like some bad Cosmo quiz or litmus test of sorts, I wondered what the towels said about the owner. Here are a few cool ones that've found that made me smile.

Target's $8 star version sings "Give me a close up, Mr. Speilberg."

Not to be undone, Garnet Hill's colorful stripes are hard to resist.

New York City has been full of the cool kids in design with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair taking place this weekend. Modern design is showcased at hot spots like galleries and popup stores around the city with hipsters mingling and cocktails swinging. While there are some seriously minded folks, it feels more like a trip on the L train late Saturday night. (Read: uberhip kids heading out to party). It sorta reminded me of the website, unhappyhipsters.com-a laugh out loud read where bloggers post magazine images then create a fake dialogue to go along with the image. This past weekend at the Festival of New Ideas, I met a charming young lady, Kate Payne, who is trying her hand as the 2.0 Martha Stewart.

She's written a guide for all things related to the home after relocating to Brooklyn and being short on cash (sound familiar anyone?). The guide hits on just about every thing related to the home-decorating, cleaning, entertaining, daily cooking and more. Written in the same voice as your best friend when asked how to make her favorite brownie recipe, she also tosses out budget tips like not buying commercial household cleaners but mix your own using white vinegar and water for the most effective, cheaper cleaner. Yes, I've heard a few times before but she really makes the case well. Considering we're not out of the Great Recession yet (ok, Wall Street may be but the rest of us are still waiting curbside for a bit of action) her tips are a reminded of how living simply and with style can co-exist.

French Dreams

It's almost Memorial Day and no plans are in the works. Dreaming of southern France but not sure how to get there. The dream is fueled by reading Kathryn Ireland's latest book, Summers in France, on her house there.

(Seriously, who wouldn't want to summer here? Isn't this the perfect shade of blue??)

Be forewarned: Only read if you want to be Really Jealous. This lady's house is pretty perfect. The Interior Designer to the stars manages to make comfortable interiors with a real appreciation for home. No rooms are roped off and no worries about spillage. Laundry Night

It's laundry night and I am dreaming of a proper laundry room while running from my apartment to the basement to a room full of bad washing machines and one folding table. I dream of organic cleaners and proper surfaces to fold things. Here's one that has got me weak kneed....

Small Hotel Rooms

What's the smallest hotel room you've ever stayed in? This past week, I stayed at the uber cool, Drake Hotel, in Toronto. The room was a mere 150 square feet.

My apartment felt like a mansion afterwards but it was a good reminder how good design isn't prohibitive to big rooms. Hotels can give smart ideas on design for limited footage.

It got me thinking about small rooms at hotels. Here's my round up:

Citizen M hotel has rooms that are 14 square meters packed full of coolness. But you have to hit Amsterdam or Glasgow to check in.

The Netherlands boasts the world's smallest hotel, Grand Hotel de Kromme Raake. This former grocery store turned one room hotel sports a tiny spot for travelers to spend the night.

In June 2011, the Yotel is opening in NYC after running a successful hotel near Heathrow in London. All the rooms are under 200 square feet so your luggage just may be bigger than the room.

In Germany, you can park it at the Das Park Pipe Hotel where the rooms run as small as a tent. Dog not included.

Eggin' on Easter

Easter is days away and I can't wait. It's a beautiful holiday with put the pressure of gifts like at Christmas or forced visits with distant relatives like Thanksgiving Day. Easter hits right as everyone is getting a bit antsy with winter and ready for spring break. It always overlaps with Passover so the city is alive with a festive feeling.

Armed with family recipes to execute on a counter top almost as big as a postage stamp, I dream of a proper kitchen. With a kitchen so small that two is a crowd, I dream of folks piled into something like this....

CB2, Crate & Barrel's version of IKEA, sits almost on the border of SOHO and Chinatown in New York. It's the sort of store that you enter, needing nothing yet buying $100 worth of stuff. Like their big sister chain, Crate & Barrel, they send out catalogs and have a cool website but like most things, it's always better in person. Was in there last week and fell in love with 5 new cool things, adding to the growing reason to keep this store on your radar.

Super cool ceramic lanterns start at 19.95.

Small space dwellers rejoice! The max mandarin ottoman pulls open to a twin bed. Guess there is room for that crazy college friend to visit after all. $499

For those lucky folks looking to spruce up their outdoor spaces, the new twin side tables pack a punch at $59 for a set.

And how ADORABLE are these planters? Equally adorable? Their sale price of $10.95.

Bill Blass said, "When in doubt, wear red." I think the same is true in the home. A hit of red adds a bit of "oomph" to an interior. (Not to mention extra storage).

Last night I attended Blue Note's Jazz Benefit for Japan night and was blown away by the talent that performed. The event was extended for performances tonight too. GO! To be able to see heavy hitters like Madeleine Peyroux, Karrin Allyson, Sonny Fortune (played with Miles!), Janis Siegel, Regina Carter, Paquito D'Rivera, etc. for a mere $45 was amazing. Hearing Renee Fleming sing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah was worth the price of admission alone. With CNN reporting death tolls reaching 14,000 and radiation still at dangerous levels, the Japanese need us.

I heart NYC, Jazz and Japan.

Desk love

For anyone who has spent time working from home, especially from a small apartment, the desk clutter can take over. My apartment got so bad it was one step from Hoarders. I got worried about friends dropping by because the amount of papers "filed" in piles on the floor basically made the floor impassable. enough was enough. So I started rooting around for storage and desk ideas.

My fav? This yummy look feels warm and personal but not still good functioning. Great color combo with the peach walls, gold velvet chair and a hit of teal. Couldn't you write bills here?

Love both these ideas on how to turn Staple's two drawer storage units that are in every office across the country into something really special. One adds wallpaper just to the front face (top image) while the second one applied chic wallpaper to the whole kit and kaboodle.

Looks like a good weekend project to me....

Tablescapes

Diffa, a terrific event raising money for AIDS, has an annual event where tastemakers create different tables. They all are visual teaspoons of sugar. While most of these tables are bigger than my apartment, they offer up some inspiration for ideas to steal in smaller ways.

They popped the color with fabric squares as backdrop.

I like the way paint was used to create wainscoting and the baroque chair that keeps it from dwell magazine photo shoot.

And if all else fails, go all white. It always seems to work.

A wacky use of colored packing tape.

The Polo table played into the Hampton "gone country" feel minus NASCAR and outdoor plumbing.

And my all time fav table wasn't actually a table but a woody turned bar. It was so chic and well done... you can follow it on followthewoody.com. It'll be hitting the polo tournaments around the country.

Spring Fling

Not to harp on the weather or anything but it's raining (again) and gray all day (again) but I am focused forward. Hometown fellow expats in the city are coming over on Sunday so I'm making my grocery list and making my plan.

Number 1 on my "must serve list"? Bloodys!

My all time favorite Bloody Mary mix is a game day concoction that Uncle Wally (who isn't my real Uncle) makes up. His has a serious kick and a lethal level of booze and is oddly delicious. My mom took left over mix one day and put it into a mold to serve as aspic on Sunday. One bite could kill a cat. Sunday morning aspic made from left over Saturday bloody mix is a terrible idea. But McClure's served midday with cheese straws, laughing with friends is very, very good one.

Step 1: Serve delish Bloodys from McClure's Mix.

Add some fried chicken, devil eggs and ham biscuits and call it a day.

Step 2: Distract from dusty apartment with stunning daffodil arrangement. Not sure if this will work but if I serve enough McClure's it definitely will. One large mass of daffodils stops traffic. At least when I am driving.

Step 3: Add a little something something to the placesetting.
Write names on eggs then drop in egg cups.

Hooks are hot. They are showing up faster than Manischewitz Wine during Passover. And for small spaces they are a saving grace. We need'em to hang coats, bags, dog leashes, towels, robes, swim suits, hats, tennis racks, scarves, belts, jump ropes... the list goes on. Cheap and now, design savvy, I'd say hooks are having their day.

Leave it to Brooks Farm General Store to have the simplest designed hooks in that "Amish or bust" kinda way.

Those guys not enough personality for you? Check out this adorable elephant hook from Anthropologie. Perfect to hold your favorite pooch's dog leash. Now, this is no white elephant.

West Elm offers this punchy version that feels modern and fresh. Add as many lacquered simple hooks as you need. At $8 a pop, they bring style to the party.

Sure, its had its moment but Ping Pong just won't go away. Playing at the Susan Sarandon owned ping pong bar the other night, I couldn't believe how much fun it was. Inspired, I returned to my tiny abode rearranging my apartment furniture to see how to fit a table. Space won't allow but man, is that game addictive!

I'm a fan of Harney & Sons Fine Tea and Mariage Freres but the new kid on the block that's caught my eye is Bellocq. They were a show stopper at the gift show in January. This little gem out shined among its competitors with sunny packaging and a strong product. Made with full leaf organic teas, they have white, green, black, oolongs, pu-erhs, and herbal variarties. Created by a former Martha Stewart Editor/Stylist, her simple yet effective tea canisters already feel like a classic. But don't take my word for it, check'em out:

Being 5"5 means that I'm always one or two inches to short to reach the top shelves. I'm forever indebted to my stepstool for taking me up on a notch in life. They are a tool that most of us need yet don't get much play.

The Container Store sells a favorite, "Slim Folding Step Stool" that's perfectly situated for tiny apartments.

Organize.com is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic Kik Step Stool that was created for libraries and taken over the home as well.

I am a self-professed serious fan of Dwell Studio. They seem to do it all and do it well. From their upscale bedding to their budget friendly baby line at Target, it all makes me smile. The lovely and stylish founder, Christiane Lemieux's book, Undecorate: The No-Rules Approach to Interior Design, launches today.
Her book's title stole my heart and is exactly the kind of decorating that interests me-personal and authentic. Shot by Melanie Acevedo, it's a power team of style.

My current favorite Dwell item is their RUGS! Incredibly well priced with all under $600, I am ready to place my order now. Take a look at this fun stripe version.

Anthropologie's Big News

Anthropologie fans unite in joy! After years of being asked "what paint is that on the wall or what wallpaper covered that piece..." they've been adding elements of home design to their stores with little fanfare. But on March 17, they are launching a decorating concept to 12 stores nationwide. They'll have an edited selection of product needed for any decorator to pull together a creative interior. They'll have wallpaper swatches from designers such as Cole & Son, Tracy Kendall and Catherine Martin as well as fabric swatches and home design product information. They'll have design books and magazines to inspire and they'll also host regular (free!) workshops with design experts. If you don't live near one of the 12 stores with this cool new addition, check out their website which will have tips and tools under the "For the Decorator." Launches March 17 online and March 24 in stores in Atlanta, Beverly Hills, Chicago, Corte Madera, Denver, Houston, London, Miami, Nashville, New York, Wayne, Westport. Mark your calendars.

Wacky Settes

In a world full of beige interiors and rooms devoid of personality, I'm celebrating those colorful settes that can fit into a small space and add just the right dose of cheer. Most aren't hard on the wallet and bring serious fun to the room.

Case in point, the Kiss created by Hellar Studio 65 and it can be used indoors or out. Made with resin and is the little sister to the famous 1971 design "Bocca" sofa. $800

Not one to stand blushing in the color, this is one piece that demands attention. J. Roaman creates patchwork pieces with loads of color and cheer.

Right on trend, this small sofa brings a hit of ethnicity to an interior place but in a way that's easy to design around. Made with a dhurrie rug so no two pieces are exactly alike it creates a sense of world travel.

Certainly no wallflowers, this sofette would bloom in a boring space. Who needs to look at flowers when you can sit on them?

Even Louie would like this updated version to his french settee. The modern fabric feels really fresh and pairs well with the traditional frame.

Small Apartment Resources

Today, I'm sending out a shout out to several resources that are cool for small square dwellers. The first is a genius idea for art lovers. Artiscle is a cool new start up that allows folks to rent original fine art in style of netflix. Perhaps it's studio living but staring at the same pictures day after day does get old no matter how much you once loved it. People pay $50 a month to rent pieces from up and coming artists. Want something different after six months? Exchange it, no problems.

It's always funny to me to hear people say that they would entertain more (or at all) if their kitchen was bigger. Truth is, great parties can come from small kitchens. James Beard, American chef and food writer who cultivated the gourmand movement in the USA, lived in a tiny apartment smaller than mine and lead a catering company from his bathtub. He wasn't waiting for the marble endless countertop and Viking stove to appear. Another gal who doesn't squash her cooking due to her small space is Jennifer C from Tiny Urban Kitchen. Someone get this gal a TV show! What she does in her tiny abode makes my mouth water and flushes all the "my kitchen isn't big enough" excuses down the toilet.

Everyone who lives in a small space needs to invest in these books. They're all on amazon and you may be able to find them at your local book shop. Sir Terence Conran is a voice to listen to. His smart ideas on limited square foot living aren't new. He's been studying/developing/writing about this for years.

March Madness

March is one of those transitional months. Some days it's Spring and some days Old Man Winter visits. After a long, hard winter, this pictures from Grey Gardens documentary pretty much sums up how I feel.

That said, March is a big birthday month with lots of my girlie gal pals blowing out birthday candles and yes, I will be too. So beyond the crazy weather days and the longing for Spring Break that doesn't happen in the work force, I'm staying focused on champagne dreams and caviar wishes. But not having a lot of space means making what you do, mean even more if hosting in my home. This image is an elegant way to create a birthday feel without going all Fifth Grade. Love the all white theme and the extra large white balloons. Love.

In small places, a mass of single variety of flowers really makes a statement. How about putting beautiful tissue around these puppies then give them to the birthday gal after the party? Love letters

Celebrating the last day of February, a month celebrating love, is a shout out to love letters. While looking for photographers for a recent project, I stumbled upon Johnny Miller's site, a uber-talented photographer currently responsible for the gorgeous images coming out of the Martha Stewart Omnedia empire, not to mention work for Kate Spade, Target and loads more. (Does he not have the Most American sounding name too?) Here's his lovely image of letters his parents wrote each other before they fell out of love. I don't know which is more powerful-what he wrote about them or his image. I dare you not to tear up.

I remember the August afternoon sat me down to ask me what I would think if my parents were to divorce. We were sitting on the top of the stairs in our house on Lawrence Avenue. I know I would not be around for the inevitable and the first words that came to me were, "Whatever makes you both happy." Three months later I moved to New York to start college.

My parents first met around 40 years ago on Halloween night at the skating rink on Haskell and 23rd St in Lawrence, Kansas. My father was stationed 25 miles away at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka and had taken the trip into Lawrence dressed in a kilt, appropriate for a boy born in Glasgow. My mom noticed him right away. At the time my mother was 15 but lied to my father and told him she was 16.

Around a year after they met, my father was sent to start his tour in Vietnam. Hundreds of letters and reel-to-reel audiotapes would be mailed back and forth. In June 1968, after my father returned from Vietnam, he invited my mother's family out to California to meet his family.

After asking my grandfather if he could propose to his daughter, he drove down to Huntington Beach in his father's car and asked my mother to be his wife. She said "yes." They planned to marry in June 1969 after my father completed his time in the United Stated Air Force. He moved to Lawrence and they rented an apartment on the 700 block of Mississippi Street. Then I was born in 1971, and my sister followed in 1974.

I can not remember now where I first discovered their love letters and tapes, but it was probably from my father's kit bag from Vietnam. Recently, I asked my mom to ship some of them out to me. She sat down, reread the letters, and cried for two hours. She called my father and asked, "What happened to these two people?"

Now that my favorite New York Times Columnist is leaving his post as The Minimalist to head over to the ed -op pages to butt heads with politicos on food policy, he left a terrific column on his all time favorite 25 best dishes. It's a must read and must print out for the midweek scramble.

I have a special place in my heart for Camellias.

These shrubs and small trees flowers come in a wide range of colors, are easy to care for and really take on a life of their own in late winter when the eye is craving life... and color... There's over 250 varieties of this fantastic flower.

Coco Channel was charmed by this lovely flower which she turned into a flower pin that became part of her signature look and is now sold in retail stores around the world.

And they continue to inspire the designers at the House of Channel.

Last week I had Sunday Supper at my talented friend, Charlotte Sawyer's home. In anticipation of Valentine's, she made a delicious casserole topped with homemade biscuits in shapes of biscuits. Her lunch guests weren't sure which to do first-eat or take pictures. This lovely dish created a universal "ahhhh" from the table and set the tone for a special meal. For a pink lover, this is a great time of year. Pink shows up all over (all thanks to Valentine's Day) and brings me joy with every spotting. As an unabashed pink fan, I think the perfect pink is the one in a Camilla like this.....

But rarely meet a pink that I can't appreciate.

House Beautiful's February issue won me over with my favorite hue taking center stage. Here's a modern take on pink. Doesn't it pair with brown mid century furniture unexpectedly well?

This room (which they ran as the cover) just makes me smile. I love the zig zag gold chair and velvet rose chair mixed with cotton candy pink walls. Just perfect.

And not to be left undone, I love this sassy outfit that just dreams "welcome to the party". Where did this gal get her tights?

Ok, small space dwellers.... I found a product for us! New for this Spring/Summer is a dual planter meets grill from Black & Blum. Crazy sounding, I know, but it works.

Here is a shot of a rosemary herb plant in a familiar traditional pot but see the hole at the bottom? That is where the tongs for the grill are kept. The top of the planter comes off and the grill appears for sudden barbecuing on the patio.

With the top off, it looks like a small charcoal grill. During the week, it gives beauty as a planter and on the weekends, it can become grilling central. Isn't this great?

Laundry Night

Mondays. Oh Mondays.

Mondays bring the week's to do list. Top of mine? Laundry. At the Gift Show, I found several things that might make the task if not more fun, at least easier.

Toss Design has a divided storage unit. It's good for many things like keeping toys in a playroom, storing sports equipment by the back door or as laundry bin. This cool bin would also be helpful in the laundry room with one side for clothing to "donate" and the other side for things that need "repairing."

Check out these over sized totes from Dransfield and Ross. Already labeled, these pretty yet practical totes give instant organization to the laundry room.

Has the pile of dirty clothes reached epic levels? Check out this large bin on casters made from vintage heavy duty canvas from Vagabond. It'll handle everything you throw at it.

French Laundry Home created their version of a laundry basket using vintage linen that's marked lights/darks/dry clean. With a top on each basket, it's a nice option because no one will see your dirty laundry.

Post holiday, January was full of nibbles and bits, design inspirations from all sorts of places.

While picking up props for a shoot last week, I had the pleasure of crossing paths with the talented, Matthew Gleason. A stylist/set designer, he has an impressive body of work and great vision. I love to look at stylists and photographers online portfolios for inspiration. Here's a still life from his book that gets me in the mood for Valentine's Day.

Hatched Furniture is on to something. Most furniture companies either sell their own line of furniture or sell custom wares. If only decorating was so easy..... What about that treasured piece you love but know it's past its prime? Or what about the piece you inherit and love for sentimental reasons but it doesn't go with your decor? What's a girl to do? Well, this company has wised up and offers a third option (they sell a line and do custom pieces too). They take existing pieces and "up cycle" them into something that works for you. They call it their 2nd Story program. See how they altered a table to make it work. Now that's an idea I can buy into.

It's the time of year that most of us cook a bit more. I recommend checking out Food and Wine's website for their "Best One-Pan Recipes." After all, just because we cook more doesn't mean we have to wash more dishes. Yum....

Style fans rejoice! Farrah Fawett gets her due. Her famous red swim suit from 1976 is headed over to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Somehow, that just makes me smile.

Seeing the light

Ever been on the hunt for the perfect table lamp but failed to find it? Mottega is a new (great) resource to get you what you want. Barbara takes it up a notch by providing custom lampshade colors in ANY Benjamin Moore paint. ANY. Here's a few she showed at the NY Gift Show this week.

Make a difference

Yesterday, Liam Holt passed away. He was a lovely six year old boy who had a rare form of cancer and was way too young to die. His story was a heart breaker but sadly, not that uncommon. I met Liam through this mother, Gretchen Holt, PR Director of OXO, a company that makes the best kitchen and garden products. Gretchen threw really fun dinner parties at all the best restaurants in NYC. She brought together editors and made them friends.

When Liam was first diagnosed with this really rare cancer, she looked the illness right in the eye and fought it hard. She learned that pediatric cancers don't receive much funding from government or private sector yet cancer is the leading cause of death of children. She started an organization called Cookies for Kids' Cancer and started with a single bake sale that sold 96,000 cookies. Having volunteered to make cookies for this inital sale, it was truly awe inspiring to watch so many volunteers make, bake and package that many cookies. It reminded me of what we can really do when we stop watching Bravo and take up a cause. Fueled with deep knowledge and almost superhuman determination, Gretchen's organization has taken the simple bake sale concept and blown it up to fund new research.

Susan G. Koman has become synonymous with breast cancer and now that cancer has a 90% survival rate. Susan's dying wish to her sister was that she cure cancer. Her sister has made great strides in doing just that. Now Gretchen is on the same path to finding a cure for pediatric cancer. I remember one conversation with her when she said she had attended over 20 funerals for children that year. As a person who can barely handle St Jude's commercials, I was shocked to learn there hasn't been a new drug for kids' cancers in over 20 years. That is crazy. Read about some of the kids (including Liam) who inspired the group of folks who joined Gretchen and Larry in starting this amazing organization.

Consider helping.

Sippin' something hot

With frigid temperatures and a frozen landscape, it's time to break out the hot chocolate. Having grown up on watery Swiss Mix versions, I never knew what hot chocolate really was until recently. In a trip to Paris, it hit me how often chocolate chaud shows up on menus. They are just nuts for the stuff! It got me thinking about New York's great chocolate spots like La Maison du Chocolate that make hot chocolate really something special but I never really get the craving till the snow is on the ground. Recently on an absurdly cold afternoon, I joined friends at the City Bakery and discovered for myself the pleasures of the drink. For $5, you get the richest cup that's topped with the world's best marshmallow. It's like heaven.

Stumptown Coffee in the uber-hipster Ace Hotel serves a delicious variety that's not as sweet, even almost bitter. It's a Mexican version that has hits of spice and richness to it. The barista poured melted chocolate into a cup then swirled in frothed milk. Just watching the production of it makes the mouth water.

Want a mix version to make at home? Jacque Torres has a yummy mix that's won a few awards though it's still better when they make it.

My fav, Donna Hay, serves up DIY mochas that would really end a dinner party in style. Chocolate curls, a shot of espresso or chocolate and steamy milk make a terrific (no cook) dessert on a cold night.

The real hero may be the chocolate used but the part that makes me smile is the marshmallows. And aren't they having their moment?? A way to raise the hot chocolate bar is add some fancy marshmallows in different colors, shapes and sizes. Marshmallows have replaced cupcakes as dessert du jour.

The Museum of Modern Art isn't just a world class museum but a place to drop plenty of cash as well. They have a truly stellar gift shop that's worth bookmarking. I hit their Spring/Summer preview this week to get a teaser of what's coming. Here are a few of my favorites:

MoMA always has a few quirky things that cause a smile like this leaf doorstop.

Another quirky thing they have in their spring line are household scissors made for both lefties and righties, keeping families happy.

A clever clock that is practical yet cool, this number hits the mark.

Exclusive to MoMA these melamine gold bowls are expensive looking but actually well priced. They give a lot of look for not that much.

MoMA is showcasing Turkish designed product so be on the lookout for those really interesting pieces. They will only be available for a limited time this spring/summer so be on the lookout on the website.
